Photo Friday:  Not an excuse, I'm just explaining my blog absence.  We rode bikes through Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam last week.  Super hot, super humid, and super interesting.  I would not recommend April for this activity--I was exhilarated while at the same time miserable.  Now we're recovering on an island in Thailand.  I'll post that photo tomorrow.

Now a note about the estimated demographics of our 10-person bicycle tour group.  Couple #1:  Age 70 and mid-50's, neither retired--best bikers.  Couple #2: Both 60-something, both retired--husband front-of-the-pack biker.  Couple #3:  One working, one retired, both 70-something, husband also front-of-the pack biker.  Two singles:  Both 50-something, work status ambiguous--good to great bikers.  And yours truly, Couple #5:  The youngsters at 50, retired and back-of-the pack bikers.  Go figure.

Photo Friday: Who's the Rude One?

The only part of New York I hate is Times Square.  It's not really New York's fault though.  It's just so crowded with tourists that it's hard to get somewhere fast.  And get there fast is what I always want to do whenever I find myself going to a jazz club or Broadway show in that neck of the skyscrapers.  That and poke my left eye out.

It seems like people only travel in groups around Times Square and they are all looking up as they walk directly into me.  And if they are not walking into me, they are just IN MY WAY.   I'll pick a subway station an extra 10 blocks away from my destination if it means finding a less populated path--even in high heels.  Even in high heels in the rain.  Even in high heels in the rain without an umbrella.

So I can identify with the post that one of my favorite readers sent to me after I posted my own attempt to dispel the myth of the rude New Yorker.  I'm not sure I would equate cluelessness with rudeness, but I see John Skylar's point in New Yorker's Aren't Rude, You Are.

Picturing Retirement: No Regrets

Photo Friday:  Today is the first day of my sixth year of retirement.  And finally, after five years of retirement, I have made arrangements to start piano lessons next Wednesday.  That way, five years from now I won't have to say, "I wish I could play jazz piano."  What will I wish I did five years ago, five years from now?  Well it won't be piano lessons.

Picturing Retirement: Fearless Photos

Photo Friday:  After I posted this post about my Vegas shoes, my step-mom sent me a bunch of great photos from their most recent trip to Las Vegas.  She basically did a photo survey of Vegas shoes while she was there.  There were some really lovely and wild shoes, but I chose this one as a good representation.  She is a fearless photographer and gets wonderful photos as a consequence.  Perhaps her retirement calling?

A Puck Not in the Head

This has nothing to do with retirement, but I thought I'd share this photo that I stumbled upon today while I was going through some old pictures.  I tried to find this one last week for the post I wrote about getting hit in the head with the hockey puck.

This shot was a few years later (note me, behind the protective glass now).  The way you can tell it's not the picture of me getting hit in the head with the hockey puck is that there are not gallons of blood spilling from my forehead.  

On this night, one of the players hit a puck that arced out into the stands (rather than coming straight at me.)  All the fans around me stood up to catch it.  I of course ducked and covered, head in my lap, hands over my head.  As everyone around me was looking to see where the puck landed, I felt it land right next to me, in my chair, next to my right hip.  Karma, right?

Now that the holidays are over, I should have time to get back to more frequent blogging.  As Denise has already observed in her first six months of retirement, there's still not enough time to get everything in, even in retirement.  Ain't that the truth!

Picturing Retirement: Disconnected

You know how they say you've mastered a foreign language when you start dreaming in it?  During the day I feel totally disconnected from my old job.  I did however have a dream about work last night, so I guess I'm not quite fluent in retirement yet.  

Practice makes perfect.
